# Crypto on the balance sheet at fair value

Cryptocurrency and digital assets appear on 476 recent papers, but only 6 of them carry an accounting, fair-value, reporting, disclosure or audit keyword. Since 2025, US firms report crypto holdings at fair value through earnings, and some firms now hold Bitcoin as their main asset. What does fair value accounting do to earnings, and does it change who holds crypto?

## What prompted this

Since October 2025, 476 papers carry a crypto, digital-asset or Bitcoin keyword (299 in finance journals, 81 in economics, 65 in AI); "digital assets" appears on 32. Only 6 of the 476 also carry an accounting, fair-value, financial-reporting, disclosure or audit keyword, and "fair value accounting" appears on 4 papers.

## Questions

- After the switch from impairment-only to fair value, did firms' earnings become dominated by crypto swings, and did analysts start excluding them?
- Did the rule change encourage more firms to hold crypto, as treasury-strategy firms claim, or did it mostly affect the few that already did?
- How do auditors verify ownership and valuation of crypto held through custodians, and how often do they qualify opinions?

## Data that could help

Financial statements of crypto-holding firms, their footnotes and audit reports, and earnings call transcripts.

## Next step

Identify every US listed firm reporting crypto assets since 2023 and decompose their earnings volatility into crypto and non-crypto components.
