# Activist investors on both sides of the energy transition

Shareholder activism appears on only 11 recent papers, and 8 activism papers carry a climate or ESG keyword. Activist funds have pushed oil companies in opposite directions: toward climate targets in 2021, away from renewable spending more recently. Which campaigns win, and what happens to the companies' strategies and emissions afterwards?

## What prompted this

Since October 2025, 16 papers carry a shareholder-activism, activist or shareholder-engagement keyword (7 in finance journals, 6 in management): "shareholder activism" on 11, "shareholder engagement" on 2. Eight of them also carry a climate, ESG, environmental or carbon keyword. The campaigns themselves, from Engine No. 1 at ExxonMobil to funds urging BP and others to cut low-carbon spending, are much better documented in the press than in the journals.

## Questions

- Do activists who push for more fossil investment and those who push for climate targets target different firms (by valuation, by past returns)?
- After a campaign succeeds, do capital spending plans, emission targets and returns change in the direction the activist wanted?
- Do index funds' votes decide these contests, and did their voting shift as ESG became politically contested?

## Data that could help

Activism campaign databases (13D filings, SharkRepellent), proxy votes, company capital spending plans and emission targets before and after campaigns.

## Next step

Code every activist campaign at oil, gas and utility companies since 2015 by the direction of its climate demand and compare outcomes.
