# Algorithmic management and the people managed by it

Algorithmic management and algorithmic control appear on 21 recent papers, mostly in management, and the topic is fading, with 2 papers in the last quarter against about 6 per quarter before. Yet software now sets schedules, rates and tasks for warehouse, delivery and call-centre workers. What does it do to effort, health and the manager's job?

## What prompted this

Since October 2025, 21 papers carry an algorithmic-management, algorithmic-control, electronic-monitoring, workplace-surveillance or employee-monitoring keyword (17 in management journals): "algorithmic management" on 9, "algorithmic control" on 6. Only 2 of them were published in July–September 2026 against about 6 per quarter earlier.

## Questions

- When algorithms set targets and monitor pace, do injuries, errors and turnover rise, and does output per worker rise by enough to pay for them?
- Do workers game the metrics, and does the algorithm then tighten, in a cycle?
- What do human managers do once scheduling and evaluation are automated, and do workers trust them more or less?

## Data that could help

Worker-level productivity and injury records from warehouses and delivery platforms, scheduling system logs, and surveys of monitored workers.

## Next step

Compare injury and turnover rates at warehouses before and after the roll-out of algorithmic pace management, using firm records or public injury filings.
