# Who checks the sustainability reports?

Sustainability reporting appears on 57 recent papers, but assurance of those reports on far fewer: "ESG assurance" on 6, "external assurance" on 3, and the topic is rising. A global assurance standard took effect in 2026. Does assurance make reported emissions more accurate, and who should provide it?

## What prompted this

Since October 2025, 34 papers carry an assurance keyword, 12 of which also carry a sustainability, ESG, CSR, non-financial, carbon or climate keyword: "ESG assurance" appears on 6 papers and "external assurance" on 3. The quarter to September 2026 had 12 assurance papers against about 7 per quarter earlier. "Sustainability reporting" appears on 57 papers.

## Questions

- Do firms whose emissions are assured restate them less often, and are their figures closer to independent estimates?
- Does it matter whether the assurer is an audit firm or an engineering consultancy, and whether the engagement is limited or reasonable?
- When assurance becomes mandatory under the EU's reporting directive, do the gaps between firms' claims and their emissions shrink?

## Data that could help

Assurance statements attached to sustainability reports, reported emissions (CDP, Refinitiv ESG), independent emission estimates, and restatements.

## Next step

Compare year-to-year revisions of reported Scope 1 emissions between firms with and without assurance for 2019–2025.
