# Corporate bond ETFs and the liquidity they promise

Corporate bonds appear on 54 recent papers in the finance and economics journals, but only 7 of them carry an ETF, fund or liquidity keyword. Exchange-traded funds now hold a large share of corporate bonds and trade far more than the bonds themselves. Do they add liquidity, or hide the lack of it until a stress?

## What prompted this

Since October 2025, 54 papers carry a corporate-bond keyword (41 in finance journals); only 7 of them also carry an ETF, exchange-traded, liquidity or fund keyword. "Exchange-traded funds" appears on 29 papers, mostly about equity funds.

## Questions

- When bond ETFs trade at large discounts to their holdings, as in March 2020, do the discounts reflect the true price of the bonds or a dislocation in the ETF itself?
- Do bonds held heavily by ETFs become more liquid in normal times and less liquid in stress?
- Do the authorized participants that create and redeem ETF shares step back exactly when they are needed?

## Data that could help

Bond transactions (TRACE), ETF holdings, prices and creation and redemption data, and dealer inventories.

## Next step

Measure the price impact of trades in bonds with high and low ETF ownership across calm and stress periods using TRACE data.
