# Data centres and the grid

Data centres appear on just 16 recent papers across the tracked journals, though the count is rising, and electricity demand on 17. AI training and inference are driving the first sustained growth in electricity demand in rich countries for decades. Who pays for the new capacity, and do data centres crowd out electrification elsewhere?

## What prompted this

Since October 2025, 16 papers carry a data-centre keyword (7 in AI journals, 4 in finance, 4 in economics), with 7 in July–September 2026 against about 3 per quarter earlier. "Electricity demand" appears on 17 papers. Most data-centre papers in the AI journals are about cooling and scheduling, not about the grid.

## Questions

- In regions with data-centre booms (Virginia, Ireland, Texas), how much have wholesale and retail electricity prices risen, and how much of the new capacity cost falls on households?
- Do data centres delay the connection of other new loads, such as factories and heat pumps, and the retirement of fossil plants?
- Do power purchase agreements with data centres bring new clean capacity, or claim capacity that would have been built anyway?

## Data that could help

Grid connection queues, data-centre capacity by region, electricity prices and generation mix (ENTSO-E, US grid operators), and power purchase agreement records.

## Next step

Relate changes in regional retail electricity prices since 2020 to data-centre capacity additions, controlling for fuel prices and other demand.
