# Does delegating to AI make dishonesty easier?

Unethical behavior and moral disengagement are rising in the management journals, and AI tools now act on people's behalf. Recent experiments suggest people cheat more when a machine does the act for them. Does that happen at work, with sales targets, expense claims or performance reports?

## What prompted this

In management, "unethical behavior" had 6 papers in July–September 2026 against about 2 expected, and "moral disengagement" 6 against 3 (see the [management dashboard](/categories/management)). Since October 2025, 56 papers carry an unethical-behavior, dishonesty, moral-disengagement or cheating keyword (35 in management journals); only 6 of them carry an AI keyword.

## Questions

- When employees can hand a task to an AI agent with a vague goal ("hit the target"), do they choose goals that lead to dishonest outcomes more often than when they act themselves?
- Does the effect shrink when the AI asks for explicit confirmation or keeps logs?
- Whom do peers and managers blame when an AI agent misreports?

## Possible approach

Workplace experiments with AI assistants on incentivized tasks, and field data on reporting errors before and after AI tools were introduced.

## Next step

Design an online experiment in which participants delegate a self-reported performance task to an AI assistant, with goals of varying vagueness.
