# Do digital twins pay?

Digital twins appear on 87 recent papers, 64 of them in AI journals and 22 in operations research, almost all about building them. Digital twin adoption appears on 2 papers. Firms are buying twins of plants, ports and cities. Which of them changed a decision, and what did they cost relative to what they saved?

## What prompted this

Since October 2025, 95 papers carry a digital-twin keyword (64 in AI journals, 22 in operations research, 7 in management): "digital twin" on 87, "human digital twin" on 3, "digital twin adoption" on 2. The quarter to September 2026 had 22 such papers against about 24 per quarter earlier. Almost all are about methods; the business case appears in almost none.

## Questions

- In firms that built digital twins of plants or logistics networks, which decisions were made differently because of the twin, and what were the savings?
- How much of the cost is data integration rather than modelling, and do the twins stay in use once the project team leaves?
- Do twins of public infrastructure (ports, cities) deliver benefits that justify public funding?

## Data that could help

Case records from firms and public agencies with costs and decisions, vendor contract data, and surveys of plant managers.

## Next step

Interview or survey managers at 30 firms that announced digital twin projects since 2021 about the decisions the twin changed and the project's cost and status.
