# Driverless trucks and platoons on the highway

Truck platooning and autonomous trucks appear on 8 recent papers, almost all in operations research journals, while driverless freight has started running on some US highways. Where do driverless trucks pay first, and how many driving jobs change rather than disappear?

## What prompted this

Since October 2025, 8 papers carry a truck-platooning or autonomous-trucks keyword ("truck platooning" on 6, "autonomous trucks" on 2), after 3 and 4 in the two years before. Seven appeared in operations research journals. Over three years Transportation Research Part E carried 7 of the 15, none appeared in economics or labor journals, and they sit next to freight transport (4), platoon formation (4) and fuel consumption reduction (3). Commercial driverless freight runs started between Dallas and Houston in 2025. ## Questions

- Which lanes pay first: hub-to-hub highway segments, with human drivers for the first and last miles?
- How many long-haul driving hours would hub-to-hub operation replace, and how many local driving jobs would it create at the hubs?
- How large are platooning fuel savings in real traffic, where platoons break up, compared with simulations?
- Who is liable, and how is insurance priced, when a driverless truck crashes?

## Data that could help

The US Freight Analysis Framework, occupational employment statistics for heavy truck drivers, state autonomous-vehicle collision reports, and federal motor carrier safety data.

## Next step

From Freight Analysis Framework flows, estimate the share of truck ton-miles on interstate lanes suited to hub-to-hub driverless operation and the driver hours it would affect.
