# Inspecting bridges and power lines by drone

Industrial and infrastructure inspection appear on 139 recent papers, almost all in AI journals about detecting defects in images, and 25 of them involve drones or robots. Ageing bridges, pipelines and power lines need inspecting more often than inspectors can manage. How much do drone inspections cost and miss compared with people, and do they change maintenance decisions?

## What prompted this

Since October 2025, 139 papers carry an inspection keyword (106 in AI journals, 12 in operations research, 11 in economics): "industrial inspection" on 36, "industrial visual inspection" on 11, "infrastructure inspection" on 6, "automated inspection" on 6. Twenty-five of them also carry a drone, UAV, robot, autonomous or computer-vision keyword; "UAV inspection" appears on 3 papers.

## Questions

- On the same structures, how do drone-based defect detections compare with human inspections in what they find and what they miss, and does the mix of misses matter for safety?
- Do agencies that adopt drone inspection inspect more often, and do they then repair earlier or defer repairs more?
- What does an inspection cost by drone and by crew once flight permissions, data review and false alarms are counted?

## Data that could help

Inspection records with both methods from transport or utility agencies, maintenance decisions and costs, and defect ground truth from later repairs.
