# Financial misinformation and the markets it moves

Misinformation, fake news detection and rumor detection appear on 185 recent papers, 140 of them in AI journals, and only 10 carry a market, stock, investor or finance keyword. Fake earnings leaks, forged press releases and coordinated rumours now move prices within minutes. How much do they move, who profits, and can detection work at trading speed?

## What prompted this

Since October 2025, 185 papers carry a misinformation, fake-news, disinformation or rumor keyword (140 in AI journals, 18 in economics, 17 in management): "misinformation" on 75, "fake news detection" on 42, "social media misinformation" on 21, "rumor detection" on 16, "misinformation detection" on 16. Only 10 of the 185 also carry an economics, finance, market, stock, firm, investor, crypto, bank or trading keyword.

## Questions

- For documented cases of false financial news (forged releases, fake regulatory filings, fabricated analyst notes), how large and how long-lived was the price move, and who traded before the correction?
- Do detectors trained on political misinformation transfer to financial rumours, which are shorter, numerical and time-critical?
- Do firms that are targeted by false news change their disclosure practices?

A catalogue of false financial news incidents with timestamps, intraday prices and volumes, social media archives and enforcement actions.

## Next step

Build a catalogue of 100 documented false financial news incidents since 2018 and measure the price reaction and reversal around each.
