# Weight-loss drugs and the economy around them

Obesity appears on 15 recent papers in the economics journals and GLP-1 receptor agonists on 2. Tens of millions of people now take drugs that cut appetite. What happens to food demand, health spending, labour supply and the firms that sell what people stop buying?

## What prompted this

Since October 2025, "obesity" appears on 15 papers and "childhood obesity" on 5, almost all in economics journals; "GLP-1 receptor agonists" appears on 2 and "weight loss" on 2. The drugs' spread since 2023 is one of the largest shifts in consumer health behaviour in decades, and the economics of it is barely in the journals.

## Questions

- Do households that start the drugs cut grocery and restaurant spending, and on which products?
- Do users work more hours or earn more after a year, and does that offset the drug's cost for insurers and employers?
- How are food, beverage and restaurant firms repositioning, and does the stock market price the change?

Prescription data linked to household spending panels, insurance claims with employment records, and firms' product and marketing changes.

## Next step

Use a consumer panel with pharmacy and grocery purchases to compare food spending of households before and after a member starts a GLP-1 drug.
