# Japan's wages after thirty years of deflation

Japan appears on 184 recent papers, with 56 in the last quarter against about 41 per quarter before, but only 21 of them carry a wage, inflation or deflation keyword. Japan's annual wage rounds have produced the largest raises in decades, and the Bank of Japan has ended negative rates. Is the wage-price cycle real, and does it reach small firms?

## What prompted this

Since October 2025, 184 papers carry a Japan keyword (117 in economics journals, 49 in finance): "Japan" on 81, "Japanese companies" on 18, "Bank of Japan" on 11, "Japanese yen" on 8. The quarter to September 2026 had 56 such papers against about 41 per quarter earlier. Only 21 of the 184 also carry a wage, labour-shortage, real-wage, inflation or deflation keyword; "wage growth" appears on 14 papers and "deflation" on 13.

## Questions

- Did the large raises at big firms in the 2024–2026 wage rounds pass to their suppliers and to small firms, where most people work?
- Have real wages turned positive for long enough to change household inflation expectations and spending?
- Did the labour shortage, rather than the central bank, end deflation, and what does that imply for countries now ageing as fast as Japan?

## Data that could help

Monthly labour survey wages by firm size, the wage round results, household expectation surveys and price data by sector.

## Next step

Compare wage growth at firms with fewer than 30 employees with that at large firms in Japan's monthly labour survey for 2022–2026.
