# Negative electricity prices and the value of storage

Energy markets are one of the rising keywords in the finance and economics journals, and wholesale power prices now often turn negative when solar output peaks. Batteries profit from that spread, but they also erase it. How much is storage worth as it scales, and who should pay for it?

## What prompted this

"Energy markets" grew across all journals (16 papers in July–September 2026 against about 8 expected) and in finance (11 against about 5); see the [trends page](/trends). Since October 2025, "electricity prices" appears on 39 papers, "battery energy storage" on 38 (31 in economics journals) and "renewable energy integration" on 69. Of the 93 papers with an electricity-price keyword, 17 also carry a storage or battery keyword.

## Questions

- How fast does the arbitrage value of batteries fall as more storage enters a market?
- Do capacity payments or other support for storage pay off for consumers, or mainly for owners?
- How should operations research models of battery dispatch account for the price effect of all batteries acting together?

## Data that could help

Hourly wholesale prices and generation by source (ENTSO-E, US grid operators, Nord Pool), battery capacity by market, and capacity-market results.

## Next step

For one market with fast battery growth, regress the daily spread between peak and off-peak prices on installed storage capacity, controlling for solar output.
