# Nowcasting with the data firms already have

High-frequency data, big data and alternative data appear on 236 recent papers across the finance, AI and economics journals, but only 10 of them carry a card-transaction, mobility, search, satellite or electricity keyword, and nowcasting appears on 9. Banks, card networks and job boards hold daily measures of the economy. Which of them nowcast GDP, inflation and employment best, and could statistical offices use them?

## What prompted this

Since October 2025, 236 papers carry a nowcasting, alternative-data, high-frequency-data, big-data or real-time-data keyword (66 in finance journals, 62 in AI, 54 in economics): "high-frequency data" on 67, "big data" on 50, "big data analytics" on 28, "alternative data" on 11, "nowcasting" on 9. Only 10 of the 236 also carry a card-transaction, credit-card, mobility, Google Trends, search, payment, satellite, electricity or job-posting keyword, although "Google Trends" appears on 22 papers in the archive.

## Questions

- In real time, with the data available on each day, which alternative sources improved nowcasts of GDP, inflation and unemployment during 2020–2025, and did the gains survive after the pandemic?
- Do card transaction and job posting data nowcast regional and sectoral activity that official statistics report with long lags?
- What would it cost statistical offices to license the data, and do the providers' incentives bias what they release?

Daily card spending indices published by banks and card networks, job posting counts, mobility data, electricity consumption and the official release calendars.

## Next step

Build a real-time nowcasting exercise for quarterly GDP in two countries with and without card spending and job posting data for 2019–2025.
