# Oil prices, inflation and the rise of electric vehicles

Oil prices are a rising keyword in the economics journals, and oil-price shocks remain a standard driver in inflation models. But none of the 189 recent oil-price papers carries an electric-vehicle keyword. As electric vehicles spread, is oil's grip on inflation weakening, and where first?

## What prompted this

In economics, "oil prices" had 16 papers in July–September 2026 against about 10 expected (see the [economics dashboard](/categories/economics)). Since October 2025, 189 papers carry an oil-price keyword (99 in economics journals, 78 in finance); 26 of them also carry an inflation keyword, and none carries an electric-vehicle keyword, while "electric vehicle adoption" appears on 20 papers.

## Questions

- Has the pass-through of oil-price shocks to consumer prices fallen where electric vehicles took a large share of new car sales, such as Norway, China or California?
- Does the change show up first in fuel spending, then in transport services, then in core inflation?
- What does it mean for how central banks should read oil-price spikes?

## Data that could help

Oil prices, national and regional consumer price indices, the electric share of car sales and of the car fleet, and household fuel spending.

## Next step

Estimate the pass-through of oil-price changes to consumer prices by country and year for 2010–2025, and relate it to the electric share of the car fleet.
