# Private equity in nursing homes

Private equity is a small but rising keyword in the finance journals, and only 2 of 22 recent private-equity papers touch health care. Private equity firms now own a large share of nursing homes and physician practices in several countries. Do their cost cuts show up in quality of care, and who pays?

## What prompted this

Since October 2025, 22 papers carry a private-equity keyword (16 in finance journals), with 8 in July–September 2026 against about 5 per quarter over the nine months before. Only 2 of them also carry a health, hospital, nursing or care keyword. "Nursing homes" appears on 4 papers.

## Questions

- After a private equity buyout, do staffing levels, inspection deficiencies and patient outcomes in nursing homes change?
- Do buyouts raise prices for insurers and patients, or cut costs that others were overpaying?
- Do the effects differ between funds that hold for a few years and those that hold for longer?

Ownership records of nursing homes and practices (public ownership files in the US, company registers elsewhere), inspection and staffing data, and claims or cost data.
