# Robots and industrial upgrading in Chinese manufacturing

Industrial upgrading is a large topic in the finance and economics journals, and China installs more industrial robots than any other country. Yet of 397 recent papers with a robot keyword, only 2 carry an industrial-upgrading keyword. Do robots move Chinese firms up the value chain, or just replace workers in the same tasks?

## What prompted this

Since October 2025, "industrial upgrading" appears on 117 papers (56 in finance journals, 48 in economics) and "industrial robots" on 46 (26 in economics). Of the 397 papers with any robot keyword (272 of them in AI journals), only 2 carry an industrial-upgrading or industrial-structure keyword. In the management journals, "industrial upgrading" is rising (5 papers in July–September 2026 against about 2 expected).

## Questions

- Do cities and firms that adopt more robots shift toward higher value-added products and exports?
- Do they hire more engineers and fewer production workers, and what happens to wages?
- Do robot subsidies speed up upgrading, or only the automation of existing lines?

## Data that could help

Robot installations by industry and country (International Federation of Robotics), customs data on export unit values, firm data (Chinese industrial enterprise data, CSMAR) and job postings.

## Next step

Build a city-level robot exposure measure from industry robot data and local industry shares, and relate it to changes in export unit values for 2010–2023.
