# Virtual influencers and the disclosure of nobody

Virtual influencers, avatars and virtual humans appear on 33 recent papers in the management and AI journals, with 9 in the last quarter against about 7 per quarter before. Brands now run computer-generated personalities with millions of followers. Do they sell, do followers care that no one is there, and what should disclosure rules require?

## What prompted this

Since October 2025, 33 papers carry a virtual-influencer, virtual-human, digital-human, avatar or virtual-idol keyword (17 in management journals, 11 in AI): "virtual influencers" on 12, "avatars" on 5, "virtual humans" on 4, "virtual idols" on 2. The quarter to September 2026 had 9 such papers against about 7 per quarter earlier.

## Questions

- In matched campaigns, do virtual influencers deliver the same engagement and sales as human influencers at lower cost and risk?
- Does disclosure that an influencer is synthetic reduce trust, and does the effect fade as audiences get used to them?
- Who is responsible when a virtual influencer makes a false claim or endorses a product that harms someone?

## Data that could help

Campaign performance data from brands and agencies, follower surveys, and platform disclosure policies.

## Next step

Compare engagement and conversion for matched product promotions by virtual and human influencers on one platform, with and without synthetic-disclosure labels.
