# What key audit matters tell investors

Key and critical audit matters appear on only 9 recent papers, although auditors of thousands of listed firms now describe the riskiest parts of each audit in their reports. Do these paragraphs say anything firm-specific after a few years, and does anyone react to them?

## What prompted this

Since October 2025, 9 papers carry a key-audit-matter, critical-audit-matter or expanded-audit-report keyword (8 in accounting journals): "key audit matters" on 5, "critical audit matters" on 4, "audit reports" on 2. Expanded audit reports have been required in the UK and EU since 2016–2017 and for large US filers since 2019, so years of reports now exist.

## Questions

- Has the wording of audit matters become more boilerplate over time, and can a language model measure how specific each one is?
- Do specific, unusual audit matters predict later restatements, impairments or going-concern problems?
- Do investors, analysts or lenders react when a new audit matter appears or an old one disappears?

## Data that could help

The text of audit reports (Audit Analytics, annual reports), restatements and impairments, and market reactions around filing dates.

## Next step

Measure the year-on-year similarity of audit matter text for the same firms since 2019 and test whether drops in similarity (new content) predict later restatements.
