Decarbonizing aviation, flight by flight
Airline, air traffic and aviation keywords appear on 142 recent papers, and the topic is fading, with 24 papers in the last quarter against about 38 per quarter before. Sustainable aviation fuel mandates began in Europe in 2025, and emissions trading now covers flights. Do the operations models and the climate policies meet, and what do the mandates cost per tonne?
What prompted this#
Since October 2025, 142 papers carry an airline, aviation, flight-delay, air-traffic, air-transport, airport or aircraft keyword (56 in operations research journals, 39 in AI, 24 in economics): "airline industry" on 18, "air traffic management" on 12, "airline operations" on 6, "aviation emissions" on 5, "flight delays" on 5, "sustainable aviation fuel" on 4. Seventy-three of the 142 carry a pricing, scheduling, network, fuel, emission, delay or decarbonization keyword, but only a handful connect operations to the new mandates.
Questions#
- At the mandated blending shares for 2025–2030, what does sustainable aviation fuel cost per tonne of CO2 avoided compared with fleet renewal, routing changes and contrails avoidance?
- Do airlines respond to fuel mandates and emissions trading by changing networks, for example by refuelling outside the covered area?
- Do the scheduling and routing models that minimize fuel also minimize climate impact once contrails are included?
Data that could help#
Flight-level data (ADS-B traces, schedules), fuel prices and mandate schedules, emissions trading data for aviation, and contrail models.
Next step#
Estimate the cost per tonne avoided of the 2025 EU sustainable aviation fuel mandate from fuel price differentials and compare it with the cost of contrail avoidance on the same routes.
