Counterfeits, superfakes and luxury resale
Luxury brands, luxury consumption and counterfeit goods appear on 32 recent papers, mostly in management, with 5 in the last quarter against about 8 per quarter before. High-quality counterfeits and a booming resale market have blurred what authenticity means. Do counterfeits erode brand value, and does authentication technology restore it?
What prompted this
Since October 2025, 32 papers carry a counterfeit or luxury keyword (20 in management journals): "luxury brands" on 8, "counterfeit goods" on 4, "luxury consumption" on 3, "counterfeiting" on 2. Thirteen of them also carry a counterfeit, authentication, fake, resale or secondhand keyword. Five were published in July–September 2026 against about 8 per quarter earlier.
Questions
- Do consumers who buy high-quality counterfeits later buy the genuine product, or do they stop valuing the brand?
- Does authentication on resale platforms raise prices for genuine secondhand goods and reduce demand for new ones?
- Do brands' own resale programmes capture value from the secondhand market, or cannibalize new sales?
Data that could help
Resale platform listings and prices with authentication status, customs seizure records, consumer panel data and brand sales.
Next step
Compare resale prices of the same handbag models on platforms with and without authentication guarantees, and track them around counterfeit scandals.
