Liquidation cascades in decentralized finance
Decentralized finance is a growing topic in the finance journals, but only 11 of 54 recent papers on it carry a liquidation, leverage, collateral or stablecoin keyword. Lending protocols liquidate collateral automatically when prices fall. Do these liquidations feed on themselves, and could they reach traditional markets?
What prompted this
Since October 2025, "decentralized finance" appears on 54 papers (33 in finance journals), with 15 in July–September 2026 against about 12 per quarter over the nine months before. Only 11 of the 54 also carry a liquidation, leverage, collateral or stablecoin keyword. Financial contagion, a fast-rising topic on the trends page, is studied almost entirely in traditional markets.
Questions
- When a token's price falls, how much of the next fall is caused by forced liquidations on lending protocols, and how fast do they propagate across protocols?
- Do liquidation bots and oracle delays make cascades worse at times when exchanges are congested?
- As tokenized Treasury bills and stablecoins become collateral, could a cascade spill into short-term funding markets?
Data that could help
On-chain records of loans, collateral and liquidations from the main lending protocols, matched to exchange prices at high frequency.
