Generative AI as a tutor in accounting courses
Accounting education is one of the fastest-growing keywords in the accounting journals, and a quarter of those papers now involve generative AI. Does an AI tutor help students learn accounting, or only finish the homework?
What prompted this#
On the accounting dashboard, "accounting education" had 10 papers in July–September 2026 against about 5 expected from its earlier share, and "generative AI" is growing there too. Since October 2025, 36 papers carry an accounting-education keyword (33 of them in accounting journals), and 9 of those also carry a generative-AI, ChatGPT, language-model or AI keyword.
Questions#
- When access to an AI tutor is assigned at random by section or assignment, do students score better on exams they take without it?
- Which topics gain (journal entries, consolidation, tax) and which suffer?
- Do weaker students gain more, as some studies of AI assistance at work suggest, or does the tutor widen the gaps?
Possible approach#
Randomize access across sections of an introductory course, measure learning with closed-book exams, and log the tutor conversations to see what students ask.
Next step#
Read the nine papers that combine both topics and note which ones measure learning rather than satisfaction or usage.
