Mixture of experts as learned regime switching

Mixture-of-experts models are among the fastest-growing topics in the AI journals, and regime-switching models have a long history in finance and economics. A gate that picks experts works much like a regime switch, yet no finance or economics paper in the archive carries the keyword. Can it forecast better across market regimes?

What prompted this#

"Mixture of experts" is among the top growing keywords across all journals on the trends page (47 papers in July–September 2026 against 31 expected). Since October 2025 it appears on 152 papers: 150 in AI journals, 2 in operations research, and none in finance or economics. Regime switching appears on 70 papers (33 in finance, 27 in economics), and only one of them also carries a deep-learning, neural-network or mixture-of-experts keyword. The Markov-switching model is on the equation ranking, half of its papers in finance.

Questions#

  • In volatility or inflation forecasting, does a mixture of experts with a learned gate beat a Markov-switching model, and do its experts look like regimes such as calm and crisis?
  • Can a Markov-switching likelihood serve as a structured gate, giving a hybrid of the two?
  • Do the regimes it finds line up with known events?

Data that could help#

Realized volatility from intraday returns, the VIX, and monthly macro series such as FRED-MD.

Next step#

Fit a two-expert mixture and a two-state Markov-switching model to the daily realized volatility of the S&P 500, and compare their forecasts and inferred regimes.
