Passive fund flows and price impact
Price impact and fund flows are among the fastest-growing keywords in the finance journals, yet none of the price-impact papers carries a fund-flow or passive-investing keyword. Now that passive funds hold so much of the market, how much do their flows move prices, and are markets as inelastic as some theories claim?
What prompted this#
In the finance journals, "fund flows" had 7 papers in July–September 2026 against about 1 expected from its earlier share, and "price impact" had 12 against about 5 (see the finance dashboard). Since October 2025, 30 papers carry a price-impact keyword (27 in finance journals), and none of them carries a fund-flow, passive, index-fund or ETF keyword.
Questions#
- How much does a dollar of passive inflow raise the prices of the stocks it buys, and does the effect revert?
- Has the price impact of flows grown with the passive share, as the inelastic markets hypothesis predicts?
- Who sells to passive funds when they buy: active funds, households or the firms themselves?
