Social enterprises when the money gets tight
Social enterprises, social entrepreneurship and hybrid organizations appear on 41 recent papers, mostly in management, and the topic is fading, with 7 papers in the last quarter against about 10 per quarter before. Grant funding and impact investment have shrunk. Which social enterprises survive without them, and do certified B Corporations behave differently from the rest?
What prompted this
Since October 2025, 41 papers carry a social-enterprise, social-entrepreneurship, hybrid-organization, benefit-corporation or B Corp keyword (31 in management journals, 9 in economics): "social enterprises" on 19, "social entrepreneurship" on 16, "hybrid organizations" on 5, "benefit corporations" on 2, "B Corp certification" on 1. Seven were published in July–September 2026 against about 10 per quarter earlier.
Questions
- When grants and impact funds dry up, do social enterprises close, drop their social activities, or find commercial revenue, and which ones manage the last?
- Do certified B Corporations pay workers more, pollute less or give more than uncertified peers of the same size, or does certification follow behaviour that was already there?
- Do customers pay a premium for certification, and in which markets?
Data that could help
B Corp certification records with scores, firm accounts and employment data, and funding data from impact investors.
Next step
Match B Corp certification records to firm accounts and compare wage levels and growth before and after certification with similar uncertified firms.
