Sustainability-linked loans: do the targets bite?
Green credit and green loans appear on 58 recent papers, most of them about China's green credit policy, while sustainability-linked loans, whose interest rate moves with the borrower's ESG targets, appear on only 3. Are the targets ambitious, are they met, and does the rate step actually change behaviour?
What prompted this
Since October 2025, 58 papers carry a green-credit, green-loan or sustainability-linked keyword (34 in finance journals, 17 in economics): "green credit" on 27, "green loans" on 15, "green credit policy" on 12, "sustainability-linked loans" on 3 and "sustainability-linked bonds" on 2. The quarter to September 2026 had 15 such papers against about 13 per quarter earlier.
Questions
- Are the key performance targets in sustainability-linked loans set below what the borrower was already on track to achieve?
- When targets are missed, is the rate step large enough to matter, and do lenders waive it?
- Do borrowers with these loans cut emissions faster than similar borrowers with ordinary loans?
Data that could help
