University spin-offs in the AI era
University spin-offs and university entrepreneurship are among the fastest-growing keywords in the management journals, while AI research shifts from universities to companies. Only 2 of 37 recent papers on academic entrepreneurship mention AI. Do universities still turn AI research into startups, or does industry absorb the talent first?
What prompted this#
In the management journals, "university spin-offs" had 6 papers in July–September 2026 against about 1 expected, "university entrepreneurship" 5 against 1, and "technology commercialization" 5 against 2 (see the management dashboard). Since October 2025, 37 papers carry a spin-off, university-entrepreneurship or technology-commercialization keyword (29 in management journals); only 2 of them carry an AI keyword.
Questions#
- Are AI spin-offs from universities fewer, later or smaller than spin-offs in other fields, given how fast AI researchers move to industry?
- Do universities with more computing resources keep more AI faculty and spin off more companies?
- Do technology-transfer offices treat AI, which often comes as open code and models, differently from patents?
Data that could help#
Startup databases (Crunchbase, PitchBook) linked to universities, faculty moves to industry, and university patents and software licences.
Next step#
Link university-founded startups in Crunchbase to their fields and count AI spin-offs per AI faculty member, by university, for 2015–2025.
