The first great succession of China's private firms
Family business appears on 124 recent papers and generational succession on 18. The founders who built China's private firms in the 1980s and 1990s are now handing over. Do the heirs keep the firms, sell them or bring in professional managers, and what happens to performance and investment?
What prompted this#
Since October 2025, 162 papers carry a family-business, family-ownership or succession keyword (74 in management journals, 63 in finance): "family business" on 124, "family ownership" on 26, "generational succession" on 18, "family business succession" on 11, "CEO succession" on 10. "Chinese family firms" appears on 11. The volume is steady (35 papers in July–September 2026 against about 40 expected), but few papers follow the wave of handovers now under way in China.
Questions#
- When a founder hands over to a child, do investment, R&D and risk-taking change, and does the answer depend on whether the heir studied abroad?
- How many founders sell or hire professional managers instead, and are those firms the better or the worse performers?
- Do political connections, which founders built personally, survive the handover?
