Financial literacy and crypto speculation
Financial literacy is one of the largest household finance topics, on 146 recent papers, but only 7 of 161 literacy papers carry a crypto, gambling or speculation keyword. Does knowing more about finance keep people out of speculative crypto trading, or make them more confident speculators?
What prompted this
Since October 2025, 161 papers carry a financial-literacy keyword (112 in finance journals, 24 in economics, 20 in management), with "financial literacy" alone on 146 and "digital financial literacy" on 16. Only 7 of the 161 also carry a cryptocurrency, Bitcoin, digital-asset, gambling or speculation keyword, while "cryptocurrency" appears on 76 papers.
Questions
- Are financially literate people less likely to hold crypto, or more likely to hold it in small, diversified amounts?
- Does literacy protect against the worst outcomes (leveraged trading, scams, panic selling in crashes)?
- Do literacy programmes that now include crypto change behaviour, or only quiz scores?
Data that could help
Household surveys that ask about crypto holdings and literacy (for example the Survey of Consumer Finances, the China Household Finance Survey and national financial capability surveys), and exchange account data where available.
Next step
Use a household survey with both literacy questions and crypto holdings to compare holdings, trading frequency and losses across literacy levels.
