Gamification from trading apps to workplaces
Gamification appears on only 20 recent papers, split across management, finance and accounting. Confetti on a trading app, points for saving, badges at work: the same design tricks are used to make people trade, save, learn and work more. Which uses help the people they are aimed at, and which only help the platform?
What prompted this#
Since October 2025, "gamification" appears on 20 papers (11 in management journals, 4 in finance, 3 in accounting). Half of them concern trading, investing, financial literacy, learning or work engagement. Regulators have questioned "digital engagement practices" on trading apps, while employers adopt gamified training and sales targets.
Questions#
- When a trading app removes game-like features, do its users trade less, take less risk and earn more?
- Do gamified savings and pension apps raise saving for people who saved too little, or mostly for those who already saved?
- At work, does gamification raise effort for long, or does it wear off and crowd out intrinsic motivation?
Data that could help#
Brokerage account data around design changes, savings app data with randomized features, and workplace experiments with gamified incentives.
Next step#
Find a trading or savings app design change (a feature removed or added) and compare user behaviour before and after with a difference-in-differences design.
