Do whistleblower rewards find fraud sooner?
Whistleblowing appears on 16 recent papers across the tracked journals, mostly on whether employees speak up. Reward programmes at the SEC and now the EU and other regulators pay tipsters a share of penalties. Do rewards bring forward the discovery of fraud, and do they change what happens inside firms?
What prompted this
Since October 2025, 16 papers carry a whistleblowing keyword (7 in accounting journals, 4 in management): "whistleblowing" on 10, "whistleblower protection" on 4, "whistleblower rewards" on 1. "Corporate fraud" appears on 15 papers. Fraud detection as an AI topic is far larger, but the human channel through which most frauds are found is barely studied.
Questions
- After a reward programme starts, are frauds discovered earlier in their life and with smaller investor losses?
- Do firms respond with better internal reporting channels, or with stricter confidentiality agreements?
- Do the rewards attract tips about the largest frauds, or many small ones?
Data that could help
Enforcement actions with their discovery dates and tip sources, whistleblower award announcements, and restatements.
