Who uses research funded from Portugal

Where the papers funded from Portugal are cited inside the 400 tracked journals: by country, by institution and by funder, and whose research the papers from Portugal cite. A citation link is one paper citing another, both in the tracked journals (from OpenAlex references). The source is the country of the cited paper's funders (OpenAlex funders and their countries); the users are the countries and institutions of the citing paper's authors. A link counts once for each funding country of the cited paper and each country (or institution) of the citing paper, so the rows overlap. Key findings#

Since 2023, papers in the tracked journals cited the 1,948 papers funded from Portugal 11,220 times (counting each citing country), #19 of 128 funding countries.
11% of the links come from papers with authors in Portugal; abroad, the largest users are China (3,291), the United Kingdom (1,246) and the United States (1,219).
The institutions citing this research most are University of Lisbon (562), ISEG - Instituto Superior de Economia e Gestão (238) and Instituto Superior Técnico (203).
The Portugal funders behind the most-cited links are Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (10,655), Ministério da Ciência, Tecnologia e Ensino Superior (511) and Programa Operacional Temático Factores de Competitividade (373).
In turn, papers with authors in Portugal draw most on research funded from China (1,813), the United States (799) and Spain (621).
